ABOUT US
The
Rotary Club of Reading Maiden Erlegh
The club was formed 20 years ago and now has over 50
members, men and women. It
meets every Tuesday evening at Reading University. The Club has raised
over £400,000 for charity since it was formed as well as providing
assistance to many local projects.
It is currently actively involved in lots of projects including
helping Whitley Park School improve its literacy, providing financial
support to Daisy’s Dream, a locally based charity (see
Daisy's Dream),
helping to fund an orphanage in India as well as buying Shelter Boxes
which provide instant homes in disaster areas.
In the past it has provided substantial support to
Addington School, The Thames Valley Air Ambulance Service, Royal Berks
Hospital and many other local and national charity projects.
Rotary is a world wide organisation which began in
Chicago in 1905. It now has more than 1.2million members in more than
30,000 Rotary Clubs in 200 countries. In the British Isles there are
nearly 1,800 Rotary clubs with over 60,000 members. It is the largest
‘volunteering’ or 'service' organisation in the world.
On a world wide basis, Rotary has played a major part
in eradicating Polio, promotes peace and understanding, sponsors more
exchange visits of young people than any other body and is likely to be
involved in every humanitarian disaster, funnelling money and resources
through its network of clubs.
Does this sound like the sort of organisation you
would like to belong to? Would you like to give something back to your
community and have some fun doing it? Want to know a bit more? Well why
not come along to a meeting—give the Secretary a ring and he will arrange
it. There is more information at www.rme.rotary-site.org.
