Reading Maiden Erlegh Rotary Club
has over 50 members, men and women. It meets every Tuesday
evening at Reading University. The Club has raised over £450,000
for charity since it was formed as well as helping with many local
and international projects. Just some of the local people we are
currently helping are Whitley Park School, The Wokingham Waterside
Centre, which helps the young and disabled get on the river, CIRDIC
which supports the homeless and Crossroads which supports young
carers. On the International front we have recently helped an
Orphanage in India and with a water project in Tanzania as well as
supporting the Shelter Box Charity which provides emergency
shelters in disaster zones such as Japan and Haiti.
In the past it has provided substantial support to
Addington School, The Thames Valley Air Ambulance Service, Royal
Berks Hospital, Daisy's Dream, The Shaw Trust and Thrive.
Rotary is a worldwide organisation which began in Chicago
in 1905. It now has more than 1.2million members in more than
30,000 Rotary Clubs in 200 countries. In the British Isles there
are nearly 1,800 Rotary clubs with over 60,000 members. It is the
largest 'volunteering' or 'service' organisation in the world.
Rotary has played a major part in eradicating Polio,
promotes peace and understanding, sponsors more exchange visits of
young people than any other body and is likely to be involved in
every humanitarian disaster, funnelling money and resources through
its network of clubs.
Does this sound like the sort of organisation you
would like to belong to? Would you like to give something back to
your community and have some fun doing it? Want to know a bit more?
Well why not come along to a meeting-give the Secretary a ring and
he will arrange it. We will make you very welcome and there is no
obligation at all. There is more information at http://www.readingmaidenerlegh.org.
